The

Replacement

I decided to take photographs of a mobile phone, with a book on the screen, in front of a classic bookcase. I did this to show the comparison with modern technology and a hobby which has been around thousands of years. When taking the photographs i experimented using different angles, apertures and distance from the camera. I decided this image is my favourite because I believe that having the phone close to the bookcase shows a close comparison in what they represent, with the phone covering some of the books on the shelf representing how technology has replaced classic books. I decided to turn down the brightness of the image to show how books are being left on the shelf, no longer being used and metaphorically turning grey.

MY FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THIS SHOOT

ABOUT

I decided to create this shoot to show how past times around for thousands of years have been revolutionised through technology. Books have been replaced by phones and kindles when books are available from the tap of a screen. Accessibility to reading materials in technology has both positives and negatives. The accessibility of books and other reading resources is a fundamental necessity at schools and with improving literacy, one of the governments main goals. However, the use of technology is consuming the current generation, with even toddlers crying over their tablet being taken away and with young children growing up through social media. I was inspired by Zach Blas in this shoot in the way that even what people learn from reading materials such as books, is learnt through the medium of technology as well as their knowledge of the World.

PHOTOSHOP

I used Photoshop to edit this image to create my desired effect. I first started by duplicating the layer with on the top layer, removing the background (part around the phone). I then reduced the brightness of the background image to show the effect of the books 'turning grey'. To highlight this idea of classic books being an outdated hobby, I then introduced the sepia filter to give the image a more old, worn out effect. After removing the part of the photograph around the phone I created a drop shadow around the outline of the phone, I did this to create a 3D effect of the phone and give an impact of hierarchy by the phone being what stands out in the image rather than the books behind it.
