Oblivious
Isolation

In this shoot i decided to take photographs using a tripod of myself in my room using three different technology sources. The current generations fascination in all things celebrity and spending hours watching a Netflix series when they should be doing revising or seeing the outside World, experiencing time with friends and family. Technology has been starting to consume our lives over the past decade, with people not being able to leave their house without their phone. I decided to take these images in a dark room to create the illuminated screens the focus of the image. I also wanted a dark room to show how people catfishing and cyberbullying are purely people hiding behind a screen in their dark and isolated environment. This photograph is my favourite because I believe the colours and tones express the way the model has isolated herself from the outside World and is completely focussed on the internet. The darkness represents that this photograph was taken late at night, as if the model has not noticed the World around and has not acknowledged how late it is. I also like the reflection of the light appearing on the models face as I believe it connects her to the technology present as the illuminated screen is affecting her physical appearance as well as her psychological character.

ABOUT
When making this shoot I was inspired by the Nationwide television advertisement 'Voices nationwide: SugarJ Poet on Face to Face'. This advertisement describes how despite being the most connected generation, with the ability to communicate with people all over the World with just the touch of a screen, we are the loneliest generation. I was also inspired by Eric Pickersgill when doing this shoot as he also explains how technology is creating ignorance in the current generation with our eyes fixed to our screens and the idea of losing our technology brings fear. With the concept of catfishing become almost a trend with the tv show 'Catfish' becoming one of the most watched MTV shows, many people are choosing to spend their time behind an LCD screen living through an online persona. In recent years cyberbullying has become a detrimental issue, with 1 in 3 young people having recieved cyberthreats, and 25 percent of adolescents having experienced repeated bullying through mobile phones and the internet.

I used Photoshop to edit this image to create my desired effect. I first created two layers, increasing the brightness and contrast of the lower layer and decreasing the brightness of the top layer. I then continued to use the rubber tool to remove the top layer from the screens present in the image. I did this so that the illuminates screens had an even higher contrast with the dark environment. I then used the burn and dodge tools on the top layer to further create the impact of a dark and solemn environment and used the dodge tool to show the faces illumination caused by the screen.
